Stress Management

Chiltern Therapies were pleased to be involved in a recent project organised by Teachers TV.

Teaching is an extremely stressful occupation. Teaching teenagers who, by and large, don’t want to be taught can be a highly frustrating and thankless task. This can be a cause of much stress and many leaving the profession. Teachers TV spent a week at Kings Langley School, Kings Langley to investigate just how stressful a job teaching is and to explore ways in which the stress levels could be reduced. The programmes will be broadcast w/c 19th February at 9:00pm with an interesting discussion on Friday 23rd to conclude the week.

Of interest to Chiltern Therapies, and to anyone interested in reducing stress in their staff, was a significant reduction in blood pressure of one of the members of staff after just 10 minutes of a seated massage. Blood pressure is a key indicator to stress levels and Dr. Nadia Wager, of Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, measured a reduction of 20mmHG which was measured before and after the massage and 20 minutes later suggesting the reduction in stress was maintained. We only tested one person so we can’t claim this to be a conclusive study but, under the stressful conditions of cameras and lights it was a good result so we will be doing a larger survey in the coming months.

To learn more about the whole weeks work, watch the Teachers TV channel on Sky from the 19th at 9:00pm.

It should also be possible to watch the entire programme on the internet at
