A Short History of Indian Head Massage
Massage has been
practised for thousands of years and is the oldest from of medicine known to mankind. Indian head massage is
based on an ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda. This is a Sanskrit word,
which can be translated as the science of life. The Ayurvedic approach
is one of a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit. Massage has always
been an integral and essential part of the daily routine in India and is highly
recommended for males and females at every stage in life. Indian head massage
originated in the home as part of the regular grooming routine, and techniques were passed
down through the generations from mothers to their daughters. The belief remains
that the oils combined with the massage itself assures lustrous hair and a healthy scalp. Head massage is also
incorporated into the treatment given by Indian barbers. The Western word
shampoo is derived from the Hindi word champi, which means having
your head massaged. The massage is invigorating and leaves the client feeling
energized and rejuvenated. Each barber has his own technique and their skills are
passed down through the generations from father to son. Indian head massage is
becoming increasingly popular in the West and is particularly well suited to being
performed in the home and the workplace as clothing need not be removed, an ordinary chair
is used and no special equipment is necessary. |
