The techniques used for this type of massage are similar to those used for Swedish massage.  The difference is that, rather than simply working on the superficial muscles, deeper, tense and taut muscles are specifically sought out and treated with highly targeted pressure.  This is particularly useful for helping to provide some relief from conditions such as sciatica, tennis/golfers elbow, back/neck pain and RSI injuries.

These deep techniques may also help to prevent muscle injury caused by imbalance and over use by releasing tension and helping them remain supple.  The deeper muscles can develop tension not normally detectable to light touch.  When these are exercised they can become damaged or even torn, causing much discomfort.

Sportsmen and women are particularly at risk from injury since most disciplines, from racquet sports to sprinting, involve the intense and explosive use of muscles.

We often combine additional techniques with deep tissue massage to achieve a specific and desired result. This includes acupressure to balance and stimulate the body systems. The acupoints we stimulate are predominantly accessed along the bladder meridian on either side of the spine.  Clearing of the sinuses is often an immediate effect.  Trigger points are also treated and released.  These are not the same as the nodules that can often be felt during a massage session.   They almost always refer pain to some other part of the body.  For example, if trigger points are present between the shoulder blades, shooting pains can often be felt up the neck although the trigger point itself may not hurt when touched directly.
